Due to its vital role in the world economy, India is fast becoming an important area of study in the modern, globalized world. Partnering with call centers, manufacturers and industries in India to ensure profit in domestic business. Renowned companies of the world often come to India in connection with business. Knowledge of different regions or regions of the world and cultural practices as well as practical language skills are extremely useful in today's world, especially for students. In all the faculties of American universities, where there are no Indian subject courses, serious consideration should be given to start it within the existing framework. Harvard University is the oldest and most talent-rich university in the United States. This university has Sanskrit and Indian studies department under the history department. Harvard can proudly claim that it has had a South Asian department since 1872, when a professor taught courses in Sanskrit as a Latin elective. Since then, the number of courses offered has only increased. Now the faculty here imparts education in Hindi-Urdu as well as in Sanskrit. In most faculties there is also an undergraduate course for PhD, undergraduate and graduate students (for Masters) in the department. It is clear from this that the study of the Indian curriculum has been an integral part of Harvard; Otherwise they would not have continued to teach it for more than 100 years. As a leading school in the United States, it is important to note that they have a small, but ever-growing, Indian subjects curriculum.

Princeton University is another school in the United States with a very different history. His course in South Asian Studies is affiliated with the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies and was started in 2007. Students can take this subject only as a second major in the undergraduate course, in addition to a discipline-based first major. This course at Yale University is available as language options Hindi, Tamil and Sanskrit and offers 25 non-language courses from South Asia. Much of the curriculum, like other universities, is broadly interdisciplinary.

Columbia University houses the South Asia Institute (SAI). The scope of subjects taught at this institute covers South Asia as well as adjacent regions, such as Afghanistan, Tibet and Myanmar. Undergraduates, however, may take classes only about South Asia without earning a major, minor, or certificate. Columbia University's curriculum certainly has room to grow, especially by offering a major or minor for undergraduates. However, it has a strong basis for a certification or a Bachelor of Arts program (especially with the number of languages offered). The Center for South Asia at Stanford University. On the other hand, the University of Chicago is famous for its South Asian program. It has two separate but affiliated groups: the Society for Southern Asian Studies (COSAS) and the South Asian Language and Regional Studies (SALAC). The Society for South Asian Studies (COSAS) is supported through university grants, while the US government funds the South Asian Language and Regional Studies (SALAC). In the year 1965, the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations was established for the students. A distinction in the languages and cultures of South Asia can be an undergraduate major or minor. Undergraduate students can complete South Asian studies courses through three different schools: Humanities, Social Sciences, or Divinity. The Department of South Asian Languages and Cultures offers language courses in Bengali, Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Tibetan, Pali, Sanskrit and Urdu. The University of Chicago has a wonderful South Asian Studies program for both undergraduate and graduate students. It also has better resources including a large library and research-based committees.

The University of Pennsylvania has a historic and well-equipped South Asian Studies Department. Sanskrit studies at Penn began in the early 1890s, but the Department of South Asian Studies really took off in the 1930s. Under the leadership of William Norman Brown, the curriculum began to expand beyond Sanskrit studies to offer more subjects. At the University of Pennsylvania, an undergraduate can major or minor in South Asian Studies. At the undergraduate level, Penn offers both a Master of Arts program and a Doctor of Philosophy program. The department also offers a number of South Asian languages including Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Punjabi, Malayalam, Marathi and Gujarati. Students also obtain language certificates in Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil or Urdu. The University of Pennsylvania program is very well organized and established. Duke University's curriculum is very different as it is an inter-collegiate curriculum with Duke, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The North Carolina Consortium for South Asian Studies (NCCSAS) promotes South Asian studies among undergraduate and graduate students. However, it does not appear that a student can earn a specific degree through this course.

There is no specific South Asian Studies department at Dartmouth College. Instead, it has an Asian and Middle Eastern Studies department focused on South and Southeast Asia. Undergraduate students take classes in a variety of courses on South/Southeast Asia in Anthropology, Religion, Languages, and Politics. While there is a course about Hindi-Urdu in cultural context, there is no language course. Northwestern University has a very similar curriculum called the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies curriculum. There is no specific South Asian Studies department or course. Northwestern University offers Hindi as a language, but only South Asian language is offered here. Both the universities can definitely expand their South Asian studies departments.

Johns Hopkins University has a great program for graduate students, but it is lacking for undergraduate students. is a course in the Department of South Asian Studies for graduate students of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). The Center offers Masters of Arts degree in South Asian Studies. This course is available in Hindi-Urdu but requires a certificate of proficiency in the language. In addition, the program offers Ph.D. Same for the student. However, Johns Hopkins should really expand its undergraduate program to the graduate level.

Washington University in St. Louis has a small but growing Indian Studies group. The university offers a minor course in South Asian Languages and Cultures through the Department of Jewish, Islamic and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. The university also provides an opportunity to study Hindi as a language. This university is certainly unique in that it has a minor but not a major subject, but perhaps the curriculum will expand in the times to come. Brown University places a special emphasis on South Asian studies. It requires 12 courses specifically related to South Asia and language proficiency in Hindi/Urdu or Sanskrit. Details of the history relating to the department are not available, but it appears to have an established course. Rice University has the Chao Center for Asian Studies. The center offers Bachelor of Arts and Masters in Arts degrees in Asian Studies, but does not offer any specific department or focus on South Asia. Hindi is the only language taught from South Asia.

Vanderbilt University has an Asian Studies course. The course offers courses in a Major and Minor in Asian Studies, but nothing specific to South Asian students. South Asian classes are also not offered. The University of Notre Dame has a very similar curriculum and also has a Center for Asian Studies. The Center offers a complementary Major in Asian Studies and a Minor in Asian Studies. Nothing specifically for South Asian courses or studies is offered. No South Asian language based courses are offered within this centre. Both Vanderbilt University and the University of Notre Dame have considerable room to grow with respect to their Asian studies departments.

Emory University has a Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies Department. The Department merged the Department of South Asian Studies with the Department of Middle Eastern Studies in 2001. Under that department, undergraduates can major in Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies with a track in South Asia. This is a Humanities degree from Emory University. This department imparts education in Hindi and Sanskrit. That concludes the review of the top 20 universities according to the US News rankings. Other universities that have better South Asian studies courses include the University of Texas and the University of California, Berkeley. The University of Texas has an Asian Studies graduate program with a specialization in South Asia. This program is also available in Hindi/Urdu, Malayalam, Sanskrit and Tamil. In addition, there is the South Asia Institute which provides support for the major subject. The University of California, Berkeley has a department called the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies. It provides a major subject for inter graduation through which students can focus on South Asian themes. Berkeley offers a wide range of language courses such as Sanskrit, Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, and Telugu. Berkeley jointly offers graduate programs such as the Masters/Ph.D. (M.A./Ph.D.) and an MA program.

As you can see, most of the country's top schools have at least Indian studies classes, if not entire departments, and excellent courses in South Asia studies at schools such as Harvard, University of Chicago, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and the University of California and Berkeley Huh. Other universities have adequate programs or are severely lacking in their South Asian studies programmes. Schools that lack a specific Indian Studies department should really consider the advantages of having one. Schools like Harvard and Princeton have seen the benefits of learning Sanskrit for over 100 years. Thus we can say that knowledge of culture and literature opens up linguistic intricacies that are wonderful and would be an interesting area to research.
